Wendell McAllister
This collection highlights the life and journey of Wendell McAllister and explores the evolution of his identity as a Black man in the United States of America.
When I interview Wendell, he was a very physically imposing figure. He is well over 6'5", with a deep voice, and firm grip. But as we talked reminisced about softer times in his boyhood in Southern California where he first became aware of his race and how the world perceived him.
The various projects in this collection examine McAllister's perception of race, view of the racial unrest that led up to the MLK riots of 1968 and how that changed him as a police officer. We also explore McAllister's view of racial discriminiation in housing and mistakes he made in real estate.
